As a surgeon he had a broad practice which included a private practice especially in the area
of dermatology. His cream and soap preparations (tar soap) were still made during E.A.
Ph,'s youth by his gradmother and by the pharmacy in Viersen (Emil Ph.).
During his 'rheinischen' military time Moritz Simon took classes in the Düsseldorfer Akademie and was a member of the Kunstverein Rheinland and Westfalen, Düsseldorf, known today as the Düsseldorfer Malkasten. Later in his leisure hours
and Sunday afternoons he worked on his landscapes. He often copied paintings; a common learning process for an amateur.
On many of his paintings and sketches he has documented the source. Nevertheless ,it must be recognized that Moritz Simon was indeed a gifted artist.
Such well known names as Andreas Achenbach 1815 - 1910 and his brother Oswald born in 1817, were both Professors in Düsseldorf. Their subjects as well as their style can be recognized in the paintings of Moritz Simon. cf. Westfälische Wassermühle by Andreas Achenbach. All the elements are present : the mill with its thatched roof, the wheel, the stream and the rural landscape.
Many other artists names can be mentioned.: Olof Jernberg cf. etching mentioned below; etc.
Today we have 30 surviving paintings by Moritz Simon. E.A. Ph. wrote me that a man by the name of Quack owned in addition to these some of the best paintings by Moritz Simon. The name of Quack does appear in the Greeven Family Tree. Apparently these paintings had been given to Tante Emma Paulus as wedding gifts and were auctioned with the Paulus estate in order to support her after the family went bankrupt. The pictures were later all lost in a fire and the topic was tabu in the family according to E.A.Ph.

In later years Moritz Simon became blind because of retinal detachment.

Dated paintings come from the last years up to 1895.
1898 - Dec. 30 - Died - M.-Gladbach - Bismarckstr. 15 ( a stroke after Christmas dinner.)

The Singer , by Arthur Kampf (E.A. Ph. called this drawing - A Soldier.)
A pencil drawing Signed : A Kampf (lower right)
Dated : 1891 20 Aug.
Height : 14cm (5 1/2" )
Width: 8cm. (3 1/2" )

Arthur Kampf was born 1864 in Aachen and died in 1950 in Kastrop-Rauxel. His brother Eugen and his father Herbert Kampf were also artists. He studied at the Düßeldorfer Academy in 1879 and became a Professor there in 1893. In 1899 he was called to Berlin where he was Director of the Hochschule for Bildende Künste from 1915 - 1925. E.A. Ph. wrote me in 1989 that Arthur Kampf was a young friend of Moritz Simon. He visited him in M. Gladbach - see exchange of letters in 1892 and apparently gave him this drawing. The drawing is typical of Kampfs interest in historic themes and certainly could have been a study for a later painting.

Pastoral Landscape with Sheep by Olof Jernberg . born 1855 in Düsseldorf. and Professor at the Düsseldorf Academy
Etching Signed: Olof Jernberg (lower right in pencil)
O Jernberg (etched in plate - lower left)
Height: 10 cm (4" )
Width: 14cm (5 1/2" )

This was probably a gift from the artist or it was acquired during the Düsseldorf Academy study period. Again we recognize the familiar rural theme of a shepherd with his flock of sheep.
